Reclaiming a Bristol narrative.
Towards the end of 2024, M Shed commissioned the Rebel Curators to stage an intervention on their permanent exhibition on the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans.
Previously curated by people outside of African or Caribbean communities, there was a pressing need to refocus the lens from a Black perceptive, to ask important questions and make noise in conspicuous silence.
Over six months, six Rebel Curators and three Rebel Creators devised a number of creative interventions to help museum visitors change the way they interact with this painful yet integral part of Bristol and world history. GRIOT is the end result - a thought-provoking series of films, illustrations, soundscapes and sculptures.
Working closely with project manager, Julz Davis, I came onboard as a tone of voice and copywriting consultant, helping to reshape the narrative and balance the needs of a powerful team.
